Developing online learning
Online delivery of learning requires a significant planning
and development stage. RTOs may develop their products in-house
or access existing online learning resources. Where
off the shelf or commercially produced products are purchased,
processes for customisation are considerations for the RTO.
Benchmarks
A number of benchmarks are emerging for the online delivery
of learning. Some of the these include:
- Learner orientation to the program and the learning
web site
- Provision of 'scaffolding' and support for learners
- Level of interaction between learners and tutors
- The range and quality of resources available to learners
- Signposts to help the learner navigate around the web
site (site maps and navigational
tools)
- Provision for choice and flexibility
- Planning for integration of online learning and campus/work
based learning
- Timely feedback processes and monitoring progress

Examples of evidence of compliance:
Documented instructional design
processes including a design statement which clearly relates
to the Training Package and identifies target audience and
client needs.
Downloaded copies of online
assessment tools designed to collect information for the learner
and the RTO on learner needs and readiness (for example electronic
survey form, self assessment tools).
Course information on the web
site including provision and information about elective
choices and core units within
Training Package qualifications and accredited courses.
Student surveys with students eliciting
specific feedback on online delivery arrangements (eg suitability
for the online learning method, satisfaction with support
arrangements, provision of resources, technical assistance).
Policy documents outlining
response times and turnaround times for feedback.
