Projects: New Practices in Flexible Learning: Synchronised E-Learning

Synchronised E-Learning: a Fishing Industry Trial
Shawn Crispin

This project focussed on the use of narrow band, infrequent Internet access as the vehicle to deliver the Seafood and Marine Training Package to workers in the fishing industry throughout Australia. In so doing, this project also aimed to identify issues in relation to online/offline learning and to develop solutions and/or models that could be applied to these issues.

The final product, as tested in this project, enabled employees to undertake remote-location learning (via the Internet), and for records of their learning assessments to be conveyed back (for central storage) to a central Learning Management System (LMS) within the shortest possible time. To ensure content currency, data was synchronised between the participant's computer and the host web-server whenever the student was connected to the Internet. Content was Scorm/IMS compliant so that it could be used across a variety of Learning Management Systems.

Project development

The project was developed through an action learning technique. The sequencing of events was:

  • development of the project concept
  • completion of industry case studies
  • development of a prototype product and user testing on land
  • user testing in remote areas and at sea, and
  • analysis of the results.

The project report which outlines the action learning process adopted by the project team, project development and results of the trials.
