Projects: Online Assessment Strategies and Models

About

The Online Assessment Strategies and Models Project developed a detailed web-based guide, Assessing Online, to assist vocational education and training (VET) professionals to design and conduct quality assessment using the web. Flexible Learning Toolbox developers and users, teachers, managers and support staff were consulted to identify the issues faced and methods used when conducting assessment in online and blended environments. The Project identified the steps involved, practical strategies used, key tools and resources available and exemplars of online assessment practice.

Objectives

The Project's objectives were to:

  • draw together findings and experiences on the conduct of assessment in online and blended environments
  • explore research findings, practitioner experiences and materials relating to the issues of identity/authentication, triangulation, moderation, validation, and general good practice in online assessment
  • identify the implications of compliance with the national standards for assessment from the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) Standards for registered training organisations, for online assessment practice
  • ensure that assessment practices derived from this Project can be audited according to the guidelines set out in the AQTF Guide to Good Practice in AQTF Auditing
  • develop an integrated set of professional development and promotional materials.

The outputs from the Project included:

  • analysis of current literature on online assessment to generate detailed information on relevant strategies and techniques
  • documented case studies of current approaches, based on targeted interviews with development teams and teachers
  • targeted materials and information to meet the specific needs of teachers/assessors, support staff, Toolbox developers and users, and VET managers
  • guidance materials including strategies and models of online assessment available through a web site
  • advice on assessment practices for future Toolbox developers and users.

Resources

Assessing Online is the website developed by the Online Assessment and Learning Strategies Project and is now available at http://www.flexiblelearning.net.au/designing/assessing

It is designed to help VET professionals plan, design and deliver assessment using the web. It includes a step-by-step guide to all stages of assessment, a gallery of sample assessment activities, detailed case studies, and findings of the Project research.

The Online Assessment Strategies and Models project also completed a survey of over 150 VET professionals. The survey provides an insight into the range and depth of assessment strategies and models being used in the online environment in VET. What strategies work online? What benefits does online provide for assessing outcomes? What are the challenges? What tools and resources are people using? You can find out the answers now at:
