The VET Learning Object Repository Project aimed to identify
the state of play with regard to learning objects, bringing
together multiple perspectives, diverse opinions and experiences
associated with the learning object paradigm. The project
encompassed a range of perspectives including:
- Learning design: the differentiation of learning and content
objects; levels of granularity, components of a learning
object; types of learning objects; and the central issue
of accommodating the specialised nature of the VET sector,
particularly with regard to the high level of contextualisation
required for this environment
- Technical and implementation issues: architecture; interoperability
of learning objects; contextualisation; and communication
with LMS
- Legal: digital rights in making access available
- Access and distribution: what is needed for discovery;
and catering for systemic and local distribution needs.

The major deliverables of the VET Learning Object
Repository Project were a
suite of papers designed to both inform and guide the development
of
learning objects and learning object repositories
within the VET sector as follows:
The first report, The VET Learning Objects
Green Paper,
invited discussion on key issues on both learning
objects and learning objects repositories within the VET
sector.
The second report followed on from a
series of workshops, focus group sessions and one-on-one
expert consultations centred around the discussion topics raised in the VET Learning
Object Green Paper.
The suite of research papers covered a range of issues
centering around a number of learning object and learning
object repositories ‘hot topics’. These incorporated
various case studies and scenarios within the Australian
VET sector
and highlighted a number of major international
research efforts in this area.

VET Learning Objects Respository Green Paper
The VET Learning Objects Project Green Paper is the first of two reports to be produced by
the VET Learning Objects Repository Project. The release of the paper will be followed up by
a series of teleconferences and focus groups designed to debate and further the key points
highlighted in the paper.
The purpose of the green paper is
to seek responses and invite discussion
from a range of stakeholders on relevant
issues surrounding Learning Object Repositories. While
the paper provides an overview of
learning objects and related issues
of metadata and granularity, it is not the intention of
this paper to add to the "What is a learning object?" dialogue,
but rather to focus on the demystification
of learning objects and to create
a better understanding of how they can be used within
the VET sector.
