Projects: New Practices in Flexible Learning 2004: Indigenous learners in the digital age: recognising skills and knowledge

About
Debbie Eagles

Debbie Eagles, Project Manager

The aims of the New Practices in Flexible Learning project, Indigenous learners in the digital age: recognising skills and knowledge were to:

  • develop an appropriate model for assessing the knowledge and skills of a range of learners such as remote, Indigenous, low literacy, Non-English Speaking Background (NESB) and specific disability
  • investigate and trial of the use of web-based voice applications for recording/transmitting oral evidence
  • integrate a simple digital, culturally appropriate reusable assessment/learning tool (CD-ROM/online activity) as part of the model
  • pilot the model with Indigenous learners studying the Certificate IV in Community Services (Protective Care) in a remote workplace, and
  • evaluate and refine the model for a national VET context.

Who is it for?

This project provides a model for the use of audio evidence within the RPL/RCC process and is of interest to:

  • Vocational Education and Training (VET) providers looking at investigation and implementation of digital voice technologies for the recognition of current RPL/RCC processes
  • practitioners who wish to investigate assessment of current competency using oral evidence
  • technicians involved in supporting the hosting and incorporation of audio technology as an alternative evidence collection option.

Resources

  • Project report outlining the development of the project, the project team, summary of the project trial and outcomes.
  • Evaluation report as the key document reviewing the development of outputs and reflecting on the impact of activities undertaken.
  • Investigation report documented much of the investigation work of the project team. Its primary purpose was to: review and evaluate a range of voice online technologies that had potential to meet the specific requirements for the development of this RPL/RCC model; to explain the rationale supporting the final choice of technology, and; to examine the construction of the assessment tool.
  • PHP Database used to capture the oral evidence which can be repurposed for future applications. To utilise the database, first open a copy of the technical requirements which outlines the skills required to install the database files and to operate and store the voice applet audio files. It is important to discuss these with your local information technology support staff to ensure that the script language is compatible and appropriate for your requirements.

Follow the link below to save a copy of the database - save all the files from the folder to your computer or server. Follow the instructions in the technical requirements document to access and use the database.
