Current PerspectiveI believe there could be benefits for services to clients in two key ways:
- Increased recognition of the integral role of librarians and libraries in the flexible learning community, and
- Provision of a re-usable model of a knowledge framework for use in other flexible learning environments

~ Sharepoint Teaching Section project plan – a pilot project for the use of MS Sharepoint as a teaching section collaboration support tool.
ImplicationsAs a result of funding my FLL project, I have investigated Knowledge Management Models and implemented some key enablers of improved KM such as the Knowledge Framework that is our new Information Architecture for the Sharepoint Portal Document Library.
The collaboration between teachers and librarians is being underpinned by the College Knowledge Exchange Team which has Head Teachers and Librarians from each college, Staff Learning and Development, Organisational Performance Improvement and Knowledge and Information Services Staff coming together to improve the intranet and other web-based systems, tools and services. This group has the responsibility for road testing web-based systems from development to design and operation. They also work to improve information literacy skills of the staff across the institute and give invaluable feedback from the coalface.
Uptake of ICT options especially in the area of support for flexible learning has been increased. We have a teaching section Sharepoint Project being piloted with the Children’s Services section at Meadowbank College. The “My Bradfield” college portal incorporates the student access to all sorts of resources and their results and progress. Professional Development GoalLucy's goal is to research and develop a knowledge management model for all TAFE Institutes across NSW to support librarian and teacher collaboration in implementation of flexible learning. Strategies
- Critical friends meetings both formal and informal are proving a boon for me in sharing knowledge and expertise, testing ideas, reviewing progress and challenging views.
- Conferences have been of value to give quick updates on the latest developments
- People, people, people – that energy from passionate people on site visits are a dream come true for getting the context with the story.
OutcomesFor myself
- skills development in leadership and knowledge management
- time to reflect on team processes
- expand my knowledge of the flexible learning community
- develop networks and collaboration and participate in online learning.
For my organization
- research on flexible learning, partnerships and collaboration between librarians and teachers and knowledge management models
- direct connection with the flexible learning community and associated knowledge sharing and learning opportunities
- implementation of planned goals related to flexible learning and knowledge management
Summary of LearningSome excerpts from my FLL Learning journal:
1. May 13 - Meeting with critical friends ? What do I mean by the notion of a model of KM and questioned whether it might end up being strategies or enablers perhaps. Advised not to get too hung up on a model specifically.how to surface the value of people “connecting”.
2. AIMA Change Management training forum 27 May:
good model of information transfer cycle from Sleigh, Making Learning fun, Wollongong, John Sleigh Management Training 1990
- Own experiences
- Others’ experiences
- Application
Leadership and manager’s roles“Of the best leader they will say when he is done. ‘We did it ourselves’.”
3. Visit with Margaret Granger Adelaide June 2- 4:
- EdNA is alive and well - Lots of exciting possibilities with EdNA re incorporating services into your own website, federated searching, rss news feeds, and interoperability.
- Adelaide Institute of TAFE Library has a good informtion literacy skills site, LILI (LEARN Information Literacy Initiative)at http://www.tafe.sa.edu.au/lili/

nice quote
“The problem with Intellectual Property is that it is an industrial age concept built around property ownership of an artefact that contained the idea.
… knowledge as value
The Digital Age is based around an experience rather than an artefact, so the concept of Intellectual Value (as opposed to ‘Property’) becomes much more relevant.”
· NCVER – Sarah Hayman contact re the VOCED thesaurus which they are prepared to share.
4. AUSWEB 2004 July 3-7:
Dee Alexander from Monash usability specialist - v. interesting speaker - paper prototypes for user centred web design. At Monash paper prototypes are used to design, evaluate and improve user interfaces.
Maureen Sullivan, Brisbane North TAFE – great KM model for her organisation. FLL 2003 – lots of links.
Reference of note Jan Duffy: Harvesting experience: reaping the benefits of knowledge.
5. ALIA Biennial Conference 21 – 24 September
- It’s still who you know that counts!
- the perception (referred to again and again by others throughout the following days) of there being two types of librarian; librarians with "their lights switched on" and those with "their lights switched off".
- leadership is a relationship based on goodwill and loyalty and as such is fluid and even precarious.
- chance and circumstance make a leader not innate quality. It is more that the leader is right for the times and fits the bill.
- the Hype Cycle – this shows how mature a technology is and can be used to identify where, when and if to jump in. It starts with the technology trigger – the new thing gets to be known, moves along to the Peak of inflated expectations ( such language!), falls to the trough of disillusionment before climbing the slope of enlightenment to the plateau of productivity.
- the challenge for libraries and learning right now to provide teaching and learning experiences.
