Sub-sections:
Objectives
Within the context of the Technological Infrastructure goal, the Flexible
Learning Advisory Group (FLAG) has to date predominantly considered strategies
aimed at leveraging public investment in information and communications
technology (ICT) infrastructure. This project focuses on VET physical
infrastructure futures and addresses the need to research, analyse and
strategise the impact of technology change on the requirements and nature
of VET physical infrastructure moving into the Information Age.
The project will consider a range of issues driving widespread changes
in accommodation strategies - for all service industries - including workplace
reform, demographic & lifestyle trends, technology penetration and
the pace of business evolution. The project will also analyse the likely
impact of technology based training delivery on the nature and use of
physical infrastructure within VET.
Outcomes
The Creation of an Impact of Clicks on Bricks good practice 'smart building'
technology issues and planning web resource for VET physical infrastructure
facilities, flexible delivery and technology staff. The web site will
address a wide range of issues and provide information relating to the
impact of technological, social and demographic change on the nature,
use and planning of physical infrastructure for training.
Issues that will be addressed are as follows:
- Drivers of change in:
- the nature of work
- work practice and conditions
- concomitant changes in design and location of the work (and/or training)
place.
- Workplace accommodation issues:
- knowledge working
- work devolution - the trend to working and studying anywhere, anytime,
anyhow
- increasing flexibility and the ability to create and disband workgroups
and/or project teams - to be able to "elastic band" working spaces
- impact of technology such as flat screens, wireless connections,
hot-desking
- workplace culture and lifestyle issues.
- Building design and management - how can VET buildings be fit-for-purpose
and capable of sustaining major change in training and work practice:
- avoid and drive out obsolescence
- clear objectives for 'smart' buildings and associated infrastructure
- the maintenance implications of high-tech infrastructure and extended
usage.
- "Standard" technology fit-outs:
- desktop standards for software and hardware
- structured or wireless technology access systems
- security access to buildings and labs
- single smart card access to all services and locations
- communications infrastructure
- online services
- 'portable' internet access
- potential for facility leased laptops through incentive schemes.
- Flexible accommodation spaces:
- costs of 24 hour access
- client security
- increased pressure on core services and facilities.
- Distribution of training accommodation - extended access through smaller
facilities located in commercial or residential area etc:
- local and overseas experiences.
- Accommodation futures - emergent technologies promise increased efficiency
of use and maintenance:
- facades that provide climate control without air conditioning or
ducting
- sensors and data logging for just-in-time maintenance
- IAI (International Alliance for Interoperability) standards for
building.
- Current and up-to-date information on smart building practices, strategies
and policies in and for Australia and overseas.
- Links to other relevant sites.
- A platform for publication of reports, policies etc. relating to and
written by the VET sector.
- A list of FAQs on technical and teaching/learning areas that will
assist those planning smart buildings.
- Web board that will be primarily for be used for ongoing contact between
facilities, flexible delivery and technology training practitioners.
The web board would be used for general discussion as well as host 'guest
experts' and publications. Access will be limited to Search Conference
participants due to site security issues.
