TAFE course handbook is available in hardcopy and online. Individual institutes booklets are available online.

General student services are available online while course specific information from the program co-ordinator is available by phone or email.

There is limited information in this area, however, there are policies at State and institute level.

Students can register online, by phone, face-to-face or by mail.

Help on enrolling 
This service is offered online and by email. Student Services staff, Client Services staff and Program staff are available to assist online, email, by phone and face-to-face.

Orientation to Online Learning 
This can be accessed through the TAFESA ONLINE site.

Induction and Orientation to Specific Course 
This is available online and through other mediums as well, being incorporated into the induction component of how to study online. It is program specific at this stage, however, Student Services are working towards a generic Introduction to online learning.

Communication Links (chatrooms, bulletin boards etc.) that are or could be used for SS.
Information is available online and by email. The student portal, tafestudents.com, has a communication hub where students can post messages and use a chatroom thus creating an e-learning community. By the end of 2001, Student Services Staff will offer both asynchronous and synchronous services using a ‘just ask us’ bulletin board and confidential chatroom through the website. The portal also offers an up- to-date TAFESA news service.

Administrative Services (changing courses, results, late fees etc.) 
This facility is available face-to-face, by phone, mail and limited email access.

Enrolled Student

Academic Support (study skills, time management, information literacy, numeracy, peer support)
Information outlining these services is available on the Student Services website which also provides email contact details. The Student Services website is linked to the student portal which also has direct links to recommended academic support sites. These sites are selected by student services staff. 

Counselling (personal)
Assistance is made available through some institutes by phone, face-to-face and email (although this is limited at present). This matter was specifically addressed in the Learnscope 2000 Project: Online Counselling Skills.

Currently, online personal counselling is not offered, however a support service through a regular chatroom time will be offered to TAFE students by the end of 2001. A confidential chatroom is currently under construction. 

Career Counselling 
There is limited assistance available by email through some institutes, with phone and face-to-face being offered. Through a ‘just ask us’ forum that will be offered in the student portal, however, it will be possible for students to seek career advice through this service. The forum has the capacity to show if a response is from a specialist or from another student.

Academic Resources (library, data bases, web sites, bookshop etc.) 
These facilities are available online and have a home and host policy between the institutes. There is also a link with other Online sites as part of the strong network: LEARN. TAFE libraries are also working towards a TAFE SA virtual library.

IT support and help line
Some Institutes and programs have help for students.

Individual institutes hold Graduate Destination Surveys and some programs run their own. 

Employment Services Online Working Party is identifying services to be offered online. This network has won Learnscope 2001 funding to identify what services will be offered online as well as developing skills to provide such services.

Job Search Skills
This service is available face-to-face and online through the various hotlinks made available. Courses, and modules as part of courses, are also held, some of which are online. Employment Services Network is identifying services to be offered online. See above entry: Learnscope 2001.

Resume Development/Interview Tips
This is available; online, with limited email hotlinks; via other modes as well. Again, Employment Services Network is identifying services to be offered online (See previous entry: Learnscope 2001).

Agency Links
(to industries, career sites, employment sites etc.) 
There is limited information available online and is specific to institute, program and industry at this stage. Some links are available on tafestudents.com.

Alumni contacts and newsletters 
Some individual institutes are investigating Alumni such as the Adelaide Institute – Tourism program.

Comment
TAFE Student Services Online aims to provide seamless student services to TAFE students irrespective of delivery mode. It will deliver this service through the student portal tafestudents.com. This is a portal that creates an e-learning community for students at TAFE SA providing easy access to:

  • Educational websites

  • TAFE Student Services

  • Communication Hub

  • Student Associations Statewide

  • Student lifestyle information

Students studying online in WebCT have access to global WebCT support and resources.

Toolboxcentral.com is a useful resource (using in particular learner support pathway) for staff. It provides information and resources from initial contact to online support for students.
