Prospective Student

Career Advice
Counsellors are available to assist prospective students in determining a career direction via the telephone or e-mail. 

Course Information/ Advice
There is an extensive course section on the website which includes; course outline, course award, duration, employment opportunities, study methods, entry requirements, course structure, resources, recognition, assessment and financial assistance.

Students can visit Course Information in person during business hours Monday to Friday.

Prospective students can access career and course advice from the counsellors, which is conducted over the telephone, by e-mail or face to face (by appointment).

Information on Administration Details (fees, RCC, enrolment or application procedures)
Prospective students can get administrative assistance and advice via the telephone or e-mail.

Enrolling Student

Enrolment Process 
For 2001, course enrolments will be available online, except where there is a need for accompanying documentation such as where the student is seeking an exemption from the course charge, or seeking Recognition of Prior Learning. Other options for enrolment procedure include: in person, mail, telephone and fax. 

The website includes a checklist for enrolling students as well as comprehensive information on the enrolment process.

Payment of Fees
There are various methods for the payment of fees: credit card (American Express, Visa or MasterCard), bank cheque, money order, and cash (only if paying in person). Payment can be made at the Course Information counter during business hours, Monday to Friday.

This is available via the telephone, e-mail or in person at the Course Information counter during business hours, Monday to Friday.

Enrolled Student

Orientation to Online learning 
The web site has information on what being a distance education student means, while counsellors are available to assist students in this area. 

Course delivery staff that provide online courses, are responsible for dealing with student issues regarding courses online.

A basic computer course is available to assist students with disabilities from the Integrated Learning and Equity Support Unit.

Induction and Orientation to Specific Course 
Induction and orientation are conducted through the subject specific areas either in the print based material or on the net.

All enrolled students receive a hard copy of the student diary that serves as an orientation tool. A summary of some of the information in this diary will be available on the net by the end of 2001.

Communication Links (chatrooms, bulletin boards etc.) that are or could be used for SS. 
Many of the on line models use bulletin boards and chatrooms for online activities and communications.

The new OTEN-DE Learning Support web site provides both online and pint based learners with subject and student support services including; FAQs, help desks, teacher introductions, errata sheets, announcements, newsletters, counselling, career advice, and special support needs. FAQs of specific subjects and addendum to Material are also available through the internet. 

While the telephone is the main tool for dealing with content issues that require a more detailed discussion, it is anticipated that there will be an increasing demand for email support. All faculties have a 1300 number to ensure access by students.

Administrative Services (changing courses, results, late fees etc.) 
All administrative services are conducted through the Student Administrative Management (SAM) system, which tracks students from the time they first approach OTEN-DE, to request an enrolment package, through enrolment, assignments, results and course completion.

Student Administration staff can be accessed through telephone, e-mail or fax.

Academic Support (study skills, time management, information literacy, numeracy, peer support)
The discipline specific tutors or teachers provide most of the academic support. This is available through telephone forums and chat rooms. Ad hoc peer support is also established in this way.

The Counselling and Careers Unit supports students with advice and counselling on study skills, time management and coping with personal issues that affect study progress. The Unit has developed a Study Skills package that is available to all students.

OTEN-DE has several units within the Faculty of Access & Equity for support of Equity group students. .

The Aboriginal Student Support Unit supports Indigenous students, addressing issues of cultural appropriateness for courses and teaching.

The Disabilities Unit provides appropriate advice or technology to support over 2000 students with disabilities. They can adapt the format of course materials, or arrange reasonable adjustments for study or exams.

The Multicultural Education and Support Unit both supports students of non-English speaking background in mainstream courses and arranges special courses for people who need integrated language and vocational skills.

The Outreach Section can tailor programs for individual needs including the Work Opportunities for Women (WOW) course, the site for which includes issues of gender equity. 

The Integrated and Learning Equity Support Unit has Teacher Consultants for students with disabilities who provide support to students. This is accomplished by the provision of appropriate advice or technology to facilitate student success with their study. There are over 2000 students with disabilities enrolled at OTEN-DE. There is also an active chat room for people with disabilities. 

Counselling personal/ Career 
The Counselling and Careers Unit has a presence on the website that is currently focussing on career developments, whilst additional material is being developed for the site. 

They also provide telephone, e-mail and face-to-face counselling for OTEN-DE students.

IT support and help line 
Technical support is offered via telephone and e-mail. 
People with disabilities have access to specialised technology and telephone assistance.

Graduating Students 

Resume Development and Interview Tips
Counsellors provide assistance and help for graduates (and students) such as resume and interview tips. They also assist with advice regarding further courses of study, articulation to university and other tertiary institutions.

Comments
The philosophy for online delivery is to provide an online supported learning environment utilising a range of online technologies. Some courses and modules are offered fully online.
