Isolated Metropolitan Learners

This review sought to identify if any barriers are experienced by isolated metropolitan learners and, where relevant, the means to overcome them. Isolated metropolitan learners were defined as learners who are enrolled in on-line vocational education and training (VET) courses and who have a metropolitan residential postcode. The review examined both Australian and international research published both online and in traditional print form between 1997-2001.

Three themes were identified as having particular relevance in identifying issues: motivation and choice of online delivery; isolation and e-learning; and, learning styles and learning culture. The report identified a number of resources thought to be useful to those involved in online learning for isolated metropolitan learners, and makes recommendations on further research required.

Women learners in Vocational Education and Training

This literature review sought to identify issues affecting women's successful participation in online learning through an analysis of Australian and international literature on online learning between the period 1997-2001.

It examined the research findings and the educational implications according to the following themes:

  • women’s adversity to computer technology
  • gender differences identified in e-learning
  • the impact of competing responsibilities
  • good practice for women and e-learning
  • and, barriers to women achieving careers in IT.

Most of the findings were taken from schools and higher education literature due to a distinct shortage of research on gender issues within online learning in vocational education and training (VET).
